Rottweiler
The Rottweiler's palette is already distinctive. Rather than inventing colour varieties, this page studies the contrast between its dark coat and warm markings.
Traits and identification
A broad head, triangular hanging ears and a substantial, muscular body are characteristic. The coat is short and dense, with clearly placed warmer markings. Individual appearance cannot establish pedigree. 1
Origin and history
The breed takes its name from Rottweil in Germany, where dogs worked alongside cattle dealers and butchers, helping move livestock and pull carts. As those jobs changed, Rottweilers also developed roles in police work and companionship. 2
Coats and sizes
The AKC standard specifies black with markings ranging from rust to mahogany. Our single example shows that recognised combination. Differences in the shade and placement of the markings do not require invented coat categories. 1
A note on size
AKC shoulder heights are 24–27 inches for males and 22–25 inches for females. A broad chest is not represented by height alone. Confirm chest, neck and back measurements and ask us about garment suitability. 1
