Traits and identification
Look for a fine, elongated muzzle, hanging ears and a balanced outline beneath the coat. Grooming can change that silhouette considerably. Breed standards describe an active, intelligent dog, but each Poodle has its own temperament. Appearance alone cannot establish an individual dog's ancestry. 14
Origin and history
Before becoming a familiar companion, the Poodle worked as a water retriever. The breed's name has German roots associated with splashing, while its cultural connection with France is longstanding. Early origins are not described identically by every authority: AKC discusses a wider European history, whereas the FCI records France as the country of origin. 23
Coats and sizes
Dense curls are the familiar Poodle look; a corded coat is also described in breed standards. The portraits below introduce six solid-colour examples, not an exhaustive colour catalogue. Patterns and registration conventions vary: the FCI standard also recognises several multi-colour combinations. These illustrations are not a test of pedigree or show eligibility. 134
A note on size
For a clearly labelled size reference, the AKC distinguishes Toy Poodles at up to 10 inches (25.4 cm), Miniature Poodles above 10 and up to 15 inches (above 25.4 cm and up to 38.1 cm), and Standard Poodles above 15 inches (38.1 cm), measured at the shoulder. Other registries use different boundaries; the FCI also recognises a Medium variety. These classifications do not determine a dress size. Measure your dog's chest, neck and body length against the chosen product's guide. 13
Colour and couture
Start with the coat in front of you, then consider the occasion. A contrasting colour can make a garment's outline more visible; a closer colour pairing creates a quieter impression. Our suggestions below are editorial starting points, not rules about what a breed should wear. The same Poodle can suit more than one mood.
