Maltese

Traits and identification
A compact body, drop ears, dark eyes and a black nose give the Maltese its distinctive expression. A plumed tail curves over the back. The AKC describes a lively companion, although personality is individual. A familiar appearance alone cannot establish a dog's ancestry. 1
Origin and history
The Maltese belongs to the story of small companion dogs around the Mediterranean. AKC describes Malta's place on ancient trade routes and references to these dogs in Greek and Roman culture. The exact beginnings are less certain than the long association with companionship; origin theories should not be mistaken for a complete documented lineage. 2
Coats and sizes
The AKC standard describes a long, straight, silky white coat without an undercoat; light tan or lemon on the ears is permitted. Here, white is shown in a long coat and a shorter pet trim. These are grooming choices, not different colour or size varieties. 1
A note on size
The AKC standard places the Maltese under 7 lb (approximately 3.2 kg), with 4–6 lb preferred for showing. That range is not a size chart. For clothing, use the dog's actual chest, neck and body length and the selected product's measurements, allowing for the coat. 1
Colour and couture
A white coat leaves room for both contrast and subtlety. The grooming length changes how clearly you see the garment's edge, so compare the whole look rather than treating every white dog as the same canvas. These pairings are editorial suggestions, not breed-specific fit guarantees.
