Traits and identification

Long legs, a deep chest, a strong muzzle and hanging ears contribute to an athletic outline. The short coat lies close to the body. These features are clues rather than a guarantee of ancestry. ¹

Origin and history

Developed in nineteenth-century Germany, this was intended as a versatile hunting dog: pointing, tracking and retrieving on land and in water. The precise contribution of its earlier ancestors is debated, so the modern working purpose is the clearer starting point. ²

Coats and sizes

The current AKC standard includes liver and black, alone or combined with white, ticking or roan. We illustrate solid liver and liver-and-white ticking. Ticking creates small coloured flecks within white areas. ¹

A note on size

AKC shoulder heights are 23–25 inches for males and 21–23 inches for females. Height does not capture chest depth or body length. Measure the individual dog and confirm suitability before choosing a garment. ¹
