Traits and identification
Characteristic features include upright ears, a wedge-shaped head, a body longer than it is tall and a bushy tail. The double coat gives substance to the outline. These clues are not an ancestry assessment. 1
Origin and history
The modern breed took shape in Germany in the late nineteenth century. Max von Stephanitz helped organise its development from working herding dogs, with Horand von Grafrath central to the early breed register. Working ability was a guiding concern. 2
Coats and sizes
The AKC standard describes a dense, straight outer coat over an undercoat and permits varied colours. Here we compare black-and-tan and black examples; these do not represent every colour or coat length. 1
A note on size
AKC shoulder heights are 24–26 inches for males and 22–24 inches for females. A substantial chest and longer body require individual measurements. A breed label cannot establish which garment, if any, will fit. 1
Colour and couture
