Traits and identification

Origin and history
Louis Dobermann developed the breed in late nineteenth-century Apolda, Germany. His work included tax collection, and he sought a protective working companion. The exact mixture of earlier dogs is uncertain, rather than a fully documented recipe. 2
Coats and sizes
The AKC standard lists black, red, blue and fawn, each with rust markings. Here, red refers to a reddish-brown base rather than a bright red. Our two examples compare black-and-rust and red-and-rust. 1
A note on size
AKC shoulder heights are 26–28 inches for males and 24–26 inches for females. The deep chest and tucked waist matter when assessing clothing. Confirm individual measurements and suitability before ordering. 1
Colour and couture
Look at the contrast between the body colour and the rust points. A pale colour may sharpen the outline or soften it depending on the base. These garments are palette references, not confirmed Doberman-sized options.
