Chihuahua

Traits and identification
Look for large upright ears, a rounded apple-shaped skull and a compact body slightly longer than tall. The muzzle is moderately short and the expression alert. These are clues from the AKC standard, not a way to confirm ancestry; individual proportions and temperament vary. 1
Origin and history
The Chihuahua is closely associated with Mexico. AKC's historical account connects its story with the Techichi kept by earlier Mexican civilisations, while acknowledging competing theories about its origins. Interest spread to the United States during the nineteenth century, and AKC recognition followed in 1904. 2
Coats and sizes
The AKC distinguishes smooth and long coats, with a wide range of colours and markings. Smooth coats lie close; long coats have softer hair and feathering around the ears, legs and tail. Fawn smooth, cream long and black-and-tan smooth are selected examples here, not a complete colour catalogue. 1
A note on size
The AKC standard gives a maximum weight of 6 lb (approximately 2.7 kg). This is a breed-standard reference, not a garment measurement. A small weight does not tell us chest, neck or body length: take all three measurements and compare them with the chosen design's size guide. 1
