Beagle

A Beagle's markings can be as influential as its base colour. Compare a tricolour coat with lemon-and-white, alongside a short introduction to this small scent hound.

Traits and identification

Broad, rounded hanging ears frame the face. The body is sturdy and compact, with a close coat and a tail carried up. These are identification clues, not proof of pedigree or a prediction of an individual's temperament. ¹

Origin and history

The modern Beagle developed from Britain's small pack hounds, used particularly for hunting hare and rabbit. Its later establishment in the United States included both field work and showing. The breed's older ancestry is less precisely documented than its modern history. ²

Coats and sizes

The AKC standard allows hound colours. The Royal Kennel Club explicitly lists both tricolour and lemon-and-white among its colours. Our portraits compare dark patches with a much lighter two-colour coat; markings vary from dog to dog. ¹³

A note on size

The AKC has two height varieties: up to 13 inches, and over 13 up to 15 inches at the shoulder. These are registry categories, not clothing sizes. Check chest, neck and back measurements for the individual dog. ¹

Lemon & white

Pale warm patches against white.

Celeste's blue creates a gentle cool–warm contrast; Audrey's black makes a bolder statement against the light coat. Keep the actual depth of the lemon patches in view.
