Australian Shepherd
The Australian Shepherd's name and markings both invite a closer look. Explore its American development, then compare a blue-merle pattern with black tricolour.
Traits and identification
A body slightly longer than it is tall, a moderate head and folded ears contribute to the herding-dog outline. The medium-length double coat can be straight or wavy. A merle coat is not, by itself, a breed identifier. 1
Origin and history
Despite the name, the breed developed in the western United States. Its ancestry involves several routes and populations of working herding dogs, including links through Australia. A simple story of a wholly Australian origin misses that more complicated development. 2
Coats and sizes
The AKC standard includes blue merle, red merle, black and red, with or without white and copper markings. Our examples show blue merle and black tricolour; the amount and placement of markings differ between individuals. 1
A note on size
The AKC preferred shoulder heights are 20–23 inches for males and 18–21 inches for females. Measure the body beneath the coat. Do not infer clothing size from the apparent fullness of the chest or neck ruff. 1
